ARTISTS
GALLERY FALL / WINTER HOURS

FRIDAY/SATURDAY/SUNDAY
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

I am a retired school teacher among other things. When I finally had time to follow things that I had wanted to do, I signed up for art classes at the community college. That was 10 years ago. I’ve had help from Jim Estey, Margaret Welty, and Betty Sederquist, who taught photography. Painting with all kinds of media: oil, acrylics, watercolor, and drawing classes, color theory, art history were all worthwhile studies that have really helped.

Watercolors were what I especially liked. I love the light that seems to come through that particular medium. So much of our world is beautiful and uplifting I wanted to be sure people saw that. That’s what I try to paint. Art studies also made me see things differently, to look more. For most of the time I am no longer concentrating on how soon I can get home or get out, but seeing the tunnel of trees with the light just so on Lotus Road. So I continued to take watercolor classes from Sonja Hamilton at Placer Adult School for 4 or 5 years and now I can finally paint pictures I like some of the time.

I’ve had the good fortune to also take workshops from Gregory Kondos, Don Andrews, Dale Laitinen, and Tony Couch.

It has been wonderful to be associated with other artists right where I live at Art on the Divide Gallery. I’ve also been involved with the Placerville side of the art community with a group of artists who meet most Tuesdays for lunch. Perfect: food, art and talk.

My partner and I have lived here in Garden Valley since 1988--old timers. We moved up from the Bay Area, Berkeley, after I got a job with Rescue Unified School District. We have a fairly big vegetable garden, a dog, and three chickens.
