Doris has taken various courses and workshops to learn drawing, watercolor techniques, and plein air painting. She has been influenced by local teachers, Margaret Welty, Jim Estey, Sonja Hamilton and Steve Covington.
Recent workshops have included tutelage with Don Andrews and Gregory Kondos. As a member of the Folsom Arts Association and North Tahoe Arts Association, Doris has had the opportunity to meet and learn from other artists.
Doris includes a variety of subjects in her work, ranging from landscapes, waterfowl, mammals, flowers and people. She particularly likes painting scenes that incorporate water, rocks and trees. An importance is placed on composition, layering of paints, and values that provide contrast and excitement
